As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Finest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year.
